A Meeting with…Eliezer Sherbatov

"A Meeting With" series allows teachers to introduce their students to famous personalities. Today we're learning about Eliezer Sherbatov, a hockey player from Montreal who started his career in Quebec and until recently played for the Marioupol team in Ukraine.

Born in Israel and a Canadian citizen, Eliezer Sherbatov has a history that is anything but ordinary. He started his field hockey career on Quebec soil, playing for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), after which he flew to France, and then to Kazakhstan. He then moved to a few European cities and now makes a living playing field hockey. Recently, he had to leave Ukraine, where he was playing, and find his family in Quebec. 

Indeed, at the beginning of March 2022, Marioupol, port city of UkraineIn the early morning of the same day, the team was bombed while the young man was at a field hockey game nearby, and the whole team was confined to the hotel, not knowing what to expect. The whole team was first confined to the hotel, without knowing what to expect. It was impossible to return to Marioupol to get anything back. La Presse had reported the story during the day.

"As time passed, Sherbatov was still without a concrete answer from the Canadian government about a possible evacuation. According to him, he was advised to stay in the shelter until further notice. Leaving with all his teammates was not an option either, because, he says, "getting on a bus with the team was like provoking one of the two armies to get shot.
