Recently, the release of the new Canada's Guide to Physical Activity made more than one jump. Thus, the recommendation for daily physical activity for young people aged 5 to 17 is reduced from 90 to 60 minutes. Statistics Canada, however, reveals that only 7 % of young people actually reach this threshold.
The threshold for the benefit of physical activity has been reduced by 30 minutes per day for young people. Are we to understand that it is necessary to do less physical activity than before to be in shape? Far from there! Data from 2007-2009 Canadian Health Measures Survey, carried out by Statistics Canada, show that barely 7 % of children actually meet the new threshold. The organization also calculated that nearly one in four children suffers from overweight or obesity in Quebec.
There is still a colossal work to be done on the side of physical activity education to prevent this news from encouraging the reduction of the efforts already undertaken.

And on the adult side? They are now recommended to be active for about 150 minutes per week, a large decrease from the 420 minutes suggested in the previous guide (1998-1999).
Canada's Guide to Physical Activity also recommends that adults and children include high-intensity activity two to three times per week.
The recommendations in brief can be found in the press release.
