4th Concours de créativité lexicale of the Office québécois de la langue française

To participate, Quebec high school students will have to use their imagination to create neologisms, i.e. new words that designate realities for which there is not yet a French name.

This year, students will have to propose words that express in French any of the following concepts: "cottagecore", "on-brand", "porch piracy" or "stream sniping". As in previous competitions, they may also propose a neologism that designates a concept of their choice.

Development of a tool to evaluate the societal impacts of artificial intelligence and digital technology

In order to make an integrating tool available to Quebec organizations, the AI Quebec Forum has mandated the Observatoire sur les impacts sociétaux de l'AI et du numérique (OBVIA) to conduct an exploratory research project to test ethical charters on the impact of AI and digital technology in our society.

The work carried out has made it possible to identify 7 principles and 25 sub-principles as well as a series of important specific characteristics to be integrated into the evaluation tool that will be developed. The following document presents the first part of this tool, including the principles, the definitions that have been validated by a group of experts, as well as a first series of ethical and risk assessment questions.

The potential of a passionate youth

Adapting education according to what our society and our youth need instead of educating them with a system from another era, this is a vast project in which Lyndsay Daudier of Youth Fusion and Robotics FIRST strongly believes.

We have to change, we will make mistakes, but that's part of the game," she reminds us. Our youth is our greatest asset and we can't afford to neglect their potential, especially with the aging population! Her advice, to do your best, all the time, because we are all complementary, is infinite wisdom!

For a two-step return

A group of teachers is circulating a petition to request a return to two steps, rather than three, for the 2023-2024 school year.

"In 2020-2021, as our daily lives continued to be in turmoil, the weighting of the stages was changed to two stages, allowing more time for teaching. Our hopes were high that this change would be maintained and be perceived as very positive by the field. However, we were surprised to learn that we would be returning to three stages for the 2022-2023 year. [...] We must put assessment at the service of learning. To do this, the first step of the new Minister of Education should be to indicate that he will return to a two-step school year in 2023-2024."

The new Health and Physical Education Network (HPEN)

For its first mandate, the REPS will target a maximum of three priority needs. It will pool the various resources and expertise in physical and health education in order to develop appropriate pedagogical content to equip teachers in the field and those in pre-service training in Quebec universities.

The REPS is directed by Véronique Marchand and has a consultation committee composed of professors appointed as official representatives or individual members of the UdeS, UQAC, UQAM, UQTR, Université de Montréal and Université Laval, as well as representatives of the educational community, including the Ministère de l'Éducation du Québec and the Fédération des éducateurs et éducatrices physiques enseignants du Québec (FÉÉPEQ).

Call to Secondary Social Studies Teachers: ICT and Digital Mapping in Geography Classes

The Geography Department of the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) wishes to produce materials that will meet the needs of teachers for digital teaching materials for geography courses. The lecturer, Guy Denault, has contacted the École branchée team in order to be able to reach teachers of the social universe at the secondary level.
