Are your students followers of the social network Twitter? Are you looking for an interesting way to promote writing and the French language in your classroom? Here are two contests that may be of interest to you.

Americas Tweeting Contest

Everyone, including elementary and secondary students, post-secondary students as well as adults, is invited to the second edition of the Americas Tweeting Contest. This event, organized by the Center of the Francophonie of the Americas and Institute of Comparative Tweet, will take place from 1er to next February 29.

The twitterature consists of the use of the social network Twitter, which allows the dissemination of a text of up to 140 characters, for literary purposes. This year, the theme of the edition is “Améripoésie”. The organizers want participants to be able to write short poetic messages about America, of course, in French. One of the goals of the event is to promote the French language in North America and its use on social media.

It is possible to use this event as a learning activity, for example by getting students in a French class (mother tongue or second) to write short texts or to express their creativity in writing. By using digital technology, the activity can also arouse the interest of young learners in the French language.

A video presents the winners of the “primary school” category of the 2015 edition. The documentation relating to the project, the terms of participation and the registration procedures will be available shortly on the organization site. Participation prizes are drawn and prizes are awarded to the winners of the different categories. Stay alert!

REFER twitterature contest

The meeting of French-language schools in a network (REFER) is also organizing the third edition of its tweeting competition, aimed at students aged 5 to 18. Participants must choose from a ten word list, which represent regionalisms from different French-speaking countries such as Canada, Switzerland, Congo or France. Depending on their level and their course of study, the student receives instructions and must write a short text intended for the Twitter platform and having the theme “Local flavor”.

For example, students in junior high or equivalent will need to include a comparison one or metaphor in their tweets. For their part, students in the upper secondary or equivalent will have to include an alliteration or an antithesis.

The registration of participants must be done by the teacher. Those interested in the competition are invited to consult the details relating to registration, admission and procedure.

It is possible to register until February 19.
