We caught up with Ron Canuel, a renowned educational strategist, who shares with us the daring 1: 1 laptop project he carried out while he was the Executive Director of the Eastern Townships School Board. He also talks about the importance of mobilizing the private sector, the government and the education community.

Text by Alexane St-Amant Ringuette

Ron was the main architect of a new program aimed at integrating the computer tool into an entire school board. Under his leadership, all students in grade three through high school were granted access to a 1: 1 laptop. A first for Canada.

The project was born from the observation that the school board was in a precarious situation: dropout rate of 43% and graduation rate among the lowest in the province. In search of solutions, Ron was inspired by a similar initiative in the state of Maine. Wishing to bring enrichment in the classes from the point of view of pedagogy, he was convinced by the testimonies of the young people affirming that the computer tool had made their learning much more interesting and relevant.

If Ron's decision was not unanimous at the start, the positive effects on motivation and academic results are undeniable. Today, Ron Canuel is invited to participate in the development of similar programs and to share his experience as far as South America and Africa.

We invite you to listen to the interview to hear Ron Canuel's full testimony about this daring project as well as to find out what he is putting forward today with the Partnership in Education.
