A database listing free and open source software by discipline

The network of college ICT respondents unveiled on May 5 a database listing free and / or free software, which is very useful for all levels of education.

Several stakeholders in the education community are interested in integrating and using information and communications technologies to teach, correct and learn. However, they come up against various questions. Do I need to obtain a license to use this software? If I use this software in the classroom and ask my students to use it as well, do I need to purchase an establishment license? Do I have the necessary rights to use this software?

To alleviate these problems, on May 5, the Free Software team of the CEGEP ICT respondent network unveiled a free software and free software database. It was relayed by Profweb, a site whose main mission is to support college teachers who want to integrate and use ICT in their teaching.

Built in a Google Drive spreadsheet, it is the result of a review of free software and free software used in Quebec colleges. It allows you to search for software based on various criteria, such as the teaching discipline or the program of study. Although some are specific to the postsecondary environment, several software programs appearing in this database will be of great interest to primary and secondary workers. These include software that specializes in music, the arts, or math.

The database thus has different functions. It can allow teachers in a specific discipline to find new software that is completely free and open source. It can also be used to check whether the software used is indeed free software or free software (there is indeed a distinction between these two terms).

The creation of this database is part of a desire to use, as far as possible and as much as possible, free software and free software in education and to promote them. An initiative from the college community that will certainly be appreciated by colleagues from other levels of education.
