During the #Clair2018 conference, we met Jacques Cool, director of CADRE21. Witness to the emergence of digital technology in schools for several years, his interest in its possibilities in terms of learning was quickly confirmed.

From January 25 to 27, L'École branchée was in Clair, New Brunswick. It is in this small school with a big heart, the Haut-Madawaska Learning Center (CAHM) that the annual conference is held. CLAIR - See education differently. More than 325 people gathered there, in addition to almost 200 students.

This is where we got to talk to Jacques Cool, himself a native of New Brunswick. In his rich career, he was a teacher and then worked in the New Brunswick Department of Education. He told us how he experienced the emergence of social networks and technologies in education. Driven by a curiosity and a particular interest in the potential that these novelties hold in terms of learning, he has held various positions of management, coordinator and pedagogical officer.

Digital: a lever for community outreach

His time at the Ministry of Education plunged him into the heart of the concept of entrepreneurial community schools, and it was there that he really realized that digital technology can become a real lever: it allows the influence of an entire community through various publication and sharing tools, in addition to highlighting the creativity of young people in all its forms. “With digital, everything makes sense,” he explains.

Having participated in each edition of the CLAIR colloquium until now, he notices that this meeting has become over the years the mobilization of an entire educational community. He particularly underlines the leadership of Roberto Gauvin, director of the CAHM, who has helped to create the necessary conditions in his school to allow everyone to try different things. So, slowly, innovation has become an integral part of CAHM. Moreover, the ultimate indicator of the success of the integration of digital technology in teaching is, for Jacques Cool, the expression of young people who have the words to present what they have created and what they have learned.

CADRE21: support focused on active reflection

Today, Jacques is director of CADRE21, a real laboratory for educational innovation. The CADRE21 plays a watch role on educational research in the 21st century. It is also a dynamic physical place that invites creativity. It is a vector of professional development which enhances the role of teachers in educational innovation. For Jacques, it is important that teachers remember that the support offered by CADRE21 is different from what is generally offered today. The proposed concept is intended to be a solution to the constraints of travel, duration and time to pursue professional development. Teachers are invited to active reflection through different subjects that allow them to move forward at their own pace.
