Basically, there should not even be a dissociation between teaching and assessment: assessment should be an integral part of the teaching approach. Assessment can be carried out continuously, during learning and for the purpose of supporting it. It must take into account the progress of the pupil, and not impose on him moments when he should be "normally" at a precise point. In short, assessment should not be the main motivation for learning.
