You are a teacher of 5e secondary or school counselor? The Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) has enhanced its Road Safety Ambassador program with new content and more videos.

Established in 2015, Road Safety Ambassador is a peer-to-peer outreach program designed to be used in 5e secondary, when young people have their first driving experiences.

Road accidents are the leading cause of death among 16 to 24 year olds in Quebec. Security Ambassador route places young people at the heart of awareness raising by encouraging them to become information relayers and to address their peers to promote responsible behavior, based on personal experiences.

Designate ambassadors

The turnkey documentation can easily be adapted to the teacher's reality. You can designate road safety ambassadors in your classroom and thus start a peer awareness movement.

The topics covered are:

  • Seat belt ;
  • Speed ;
  • Cellular and texting;
  • Tiredness ;
  • The alcohol :
  • Drugs ;
  • The graduation party.

To discover the testimony of road safety ambassadors and their teacher, watch the video from Beaurivage high school in Saint-Agapit.

Educational material for secondary school

In its tab Documentation, the SAAQ provides high school teachers, police officers and other stakeholders with educational tools so that students adopt safe behavior on the road.

THE POWER TO CHANGE EVERYTHING

Our power to change everything is an educational kit designed for students of 5e secondary school and the interveners who work with them, which informs about the dangers associated with impaired driving, driving fatigue, speed, distraction and not wearing a seat belt.

The kit contains an 18-minute DVD documentary film that initiates dialogue and supports stakeholders in their awareness-raising process. The fictional documentary shows the reality of young people aged 16-17 who, as a driver have consumed, or as a passenger, choose whether or not to ride with a driver who has consumed and intervene to dissuade him from driving. Video testimonials from first responders and victims can also be viewed by students outside of the classroom.

Finally, the kit includes a poster, an animation guide offering leads to the facilitator to encourage the students to share their reactions following the viewing of the documentary-fiction and a pact for life through which the students commit to never drive or be driven by someone while impaired.

INTERACTIVE CONFERENCE LOOP IT

This is an interactive conference to educate young people and the general public about the importance of wearing seat belts. This activity proposes to demonstrate, using a car fixed on a rotating axis to simulate rollovers, the consequences of not wearing a seat belt during a road accident.

The topics covered during the activity are the importance of wearing a seat belt, the risk of ejection and the movement of free objects in the passenger compartment.

For more information, visit the Facebook page of the activity.

GUIDE FOR ORGANIZING A BIKE RIDE WITH YOUNG PEOPLE

The latest educational tool offered by the SAAQ is a guide to organizing a bike ride with young people specially designed for teachers, physical educators and leisure activity leaders. Everything has been thought of: planning steps, safe practices, specialist advice, preparations related to equipment, troubleshooting and power and even a participant's notebook which allows young people to be involved in the organization of the activity.
