Added value, the Federation of Quebec School Boards (FCSQ) paid tribute to the Hauts-Cantons School Board, which played a leading role during the Lac-Mégantic tragedy, by awarding it the Gold Medal of the Order of Merit. This distinction recognizes in particular the leadership of the recipient, his influence, his commitment, his thoroughness and the work he has done to promote the cause of education.
On July 6, the municipality of Lac-Mégantic was struck by an unprecedented tragedy, which marked all of Quebec. 47 people died and part of the city center was destroyed following the derailment of a train carrying cars filled with light crude oil.
Support for disaster victims and authorities
Despite the distress and chaos, help was organized quickly and among the front-line responders was the Hauts-Cantons School Board, which quickly opened the Polyvalente de Lac-Mégantic to accommodate the victims. . Up to 300 people stayed at the high school, but the school board's support for its community during this tragedy also resulted in the loan of premises to the municipality, the police and firefighters as well as to certain businesses. in order to ensure the smooth running of several essential services.
A disrupted return to school
The Hauts-Cantons School Board also took up the challenge of organizing the start of the new school year in a record time of two weeks, thanks to the full collaboration of the staff. She also made sure to put in place support measures for staff and students who felt the need.
“Even today, the school board is involved in the reconstruction of the municipality, thus testifying to its essential role in the socio-economic development of its community,” said FCSQ president Josée Bouchard.
30 years at the service of the FCSQ
The FCSQ also awarded the Gold Medal of the Order of Merit to Denis Pouliot, for his 30 years of service to the Federation, notably as Director of Communications and Public Affairs.
