Montreal, May 16, 2019 - The Literacy Foundation has achieved the goal it set itself last October: that of raising more than 100,000 new books to give back to children aged 0 to 12 years old. disadvantaged communities, as part of the 20th edition of the Reading as a gift program.

The Gift of Reading program aims to prevent reading and writing difficulties that could lead to dropping out of school and subsequently to illiteracy. For a child from a disadvantaged background, this book is often the first new book he receives. The child appreciates all the more the value of a new book, especially in a context where this book was chosen especially for him by a donor whom he does not know.

The success of this campaign is unquestionably due to the generous participation of the partners (the Government of Quebec, the Desjardins Foundation, Hydro-Quebec, Quebecor, among others), but also to that of the Quebec population who answered the call. . Quebecers, who have recognized the importance of books in the education of young people, shared their youth favorites with the young people affected by the campaign. “Twenty years ago, our visionary predecessors laid the foundations for a real social project. The collective effort that we have witnessed during this 20th edition leaves us dreaming of a future in which more and more children will be able to receive a taste for reading. ” supports André Huberdeau, Chairman of the Board of the Literacy Foundation.

Salomé Corbo, spokesperson for the program, is always touched by the times when books are handed over in schools and tells how important these books are for the students: “We have succeeded in putting at the heart of their reality this passion for reading and the desire to discover more. "

The book deliveries closed in Quebec City and Montreal on May 21 and June 3, respectively.
