For several weeks, the media have been telling us the same news: the Amazon rainforest is grappling with hundreds of fires that are destroying what is called by some, "the lung of the planet". The subject is so important to the international community that the G7 leaders even spoke about it during their recent meeting in Biarritz.

“Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro again downplayed on Thursday the severity of the fires raging in the Amazon, while the temporary ban on agricultural burning in the whole country came into force. It “is not true” that the Amazon rainforest is “on fire”, affirmed Mr. Bolsonaro live on Facebook, while assuring that “the fires this year are lower than the average of recent years”. He accused the Brazilian press of “feeding” international concern on this subject. The president's statement comes as Thursday entered into force the temporary ban on agricultural burning, announced to slow the progression of fires in the Amazon and try to demonstrate Brazil's responsiveness.
